About Heinz Ventures

An operator-led investment firm for early-stage medical technology.

Overview

Heinz Ventures is an early-stage medical technology investment firm founded by Eric S. Heinz in 2015. The firm invests in pre-seed and seed-stage companies developing regulated medical technologies, and works alongside founders from initial financing through commercialization and strategic development.

Heinz Ventures is an investment firm — not an accelerator, incubator, or general-purpose advisory practice. What sets it apart is that it pairs capital with operating experience: its perspective comes from more than 25+ years inside medical technology — engineering, product, commercialization, corporate development, and M&A — rather than from finance alone. That operator's lens shapes what the firm looks for, how it underwrites risk, and how it supports the companies it backs.

What We Invest In

The firm concentrates on pre-seed and seed-stage medical devices and MedTech, with a preference for U.S. companies in the Midwest and Southeast building regulated products where meaningful clinical need, differentiated intellectual property, an achievable regulatory pathway, and strategic relevance to eventual acquirers combine to create durable value.

Heinz Ventures believes regulation can be a source of defensibility rather than only friction. The technical, clinical, regulatory, and commercial complexity that slows a category down is often the same complexity that protects the companies able to navigate it.

Professional Expertise

Alongside its investing, the firm's founder serves selectively as an independent expert witness, board director, and business-development advisor in matters that demand deep medical-device operating experience.

These engagements are less a separate business than an extension of the same expertise. Expert witness work brings visibility into how devices, decisions, and disputes actually play out — sharpening the risk judgment Eric brings to a boardroom. Board and advisory work deepen the firm's understanding of where disciplined governance and strategic support help medical technology companies advance responsibly. Each strengthens the others, and all of it informs how Heinz Ventures invests.

Professional engagements are conducted independently of the firm's investment activities, are selective, and are provided under formal written terms following conflict review.

How We Work

  • Operator-led — the firm engages where hands-on medical-device experience can materially influence an outcome, not from a distance.

  • Independent judgment — clarity and objectivity over momentum or optics.

  • Focused — defined scope, defined outcomes, and disciplined follow-through.

  • Regulated from the start — product, clinical, regulatory, and commercial pathways aligned early, not retrofitted.

  • Selective — a small number of relationships, each given real attention.
