Eric S. Heinz, Founder and Managing Partner, Heinz Ventures

Eric S. Heinz is the Founder and Managing Partner of Heinz Ventures, an operator-led early-stage medical technology investment firm. He brings more than 25 years of experience across regulated medical technology, spanning engineering, product development, product management, commercialization, corporate development, mergers and acquisitions, governance, and venture investing.

He began his career as an engineer with Medtronic Sofamor Danek, working in orthopedic and spine medical devices. He later moved into product management at Intuitive Surgical during the early commercialization of robotic surgery, followed by commercial and marketing leadership roles at Zimmer and IMRIS. He subsequently led business development and M&A activities at Smith+Nephew and served as Vice President of Market and Corporate Development at Titan Medical.

Across these roles, Heinz has worked at the intersection of technology, clinical need, regulatory strategy, commercialization, strategic transactions, and corporate governance. His experience includes medical device product development and commercialization, strategic partnerships, licensing, mergers and acquisitions, strategic alternatives, and the assessment and management of risk in regulated healthcare businesses.

Through Heinz Ventures, Heinz invests in pre-seed and seed-stage medical technology companies developing regulated products. His investment approach is informed by his experience as an engineer, operator, corporate development executive, and board member. He works closely with founders and management teams on product and regulatory strategy, commercialization, governance, strategic partnerships, financing, business development, and positioning for future transactions.

He currently serves as Board Chair of Auvi Labs, an Independent Board Director of CytexOrtho, Business Development Advisor to CranioSense, and Advisor to Madison Scientific. He also participates in academic, institutional, and industry innovation ecosystems, including roles with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Cleveland Clinic, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and other medical technology and venture organizations.

Heinz is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where his teaching and mentoring interests include medical device innovation, commercialization, venture capital, entrepreneurship, corporate strategy, and the translation of engineering innovation into clinically and commercially meaningful products.

In addition to his investing and governance activities, Heinz selectively serves as an independent expert witness and business development advisor in matters requiring deep experience in regulated medical technology. His expert work includes medical device product liability, surgical robotics, intellectual property, commercial and transaction disputes, and M&A-related matters.

Heinz earned a B.S., majoring in Bioengineering, from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; a Master of Engineering Management from Christian Brothers University; an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management; and a graduate certificate from the Stanford Biodesign program. He is a USPTO Registered Patent Agent and a named inventor on 19 issued U.S. patents.

He was named to the Memphis Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 in 2019 and has contributed to the MedTech ecosystem as an investor, board member, speaker, judge, educator, and advisor.
