MadSci | Heinz Ventures Portfolio

Madison Scientific (MadSci) is a neurotechnology company developing the SmartShunt Hydrocephalus Management System — an implantable device that pairs a proprietary smart valve with an intracranial-pressure sensor and algorithms to personalize cerebrospinal-fluid drainage. Shunts are the standard of care for hydrocephalus but have seen little fundamental change in decades and fail at high rates, often within the first year. MadSci's approach is designed to bring real-time sensing and intelligent control to that unchanged standard. The technology originated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Madison Scientific is a Heinz Ventures portfolio company, and Eric Heinz serves as an advisor.

Why it fits the Heinz Ventures thesis
Hydrocephalus is among the most common conditions neurosurgeons treat, yet the shunt technology used to manage it is decades old and fails often — driving repeat surgeries, hospitalizations, and hard-to-detect complications. That combination of large unmet need and stagnant technology is precisely where Heinz Ventures looks for durable value.
MadSci fits the thesis across the board: a serious, underserved clinical problem; differentiated intellectual property integrating sensing, valve control, and algorithms, with academic origins at the University of Wisconsin; a device-plus-data model with recurring revenue potential; and clear strategic relevance to established neurosurgical and CSF-management players as it advances toward the clinic.
