Venture Partner
Larry Liu brings more than 15 years of experience across medical devices, surgical robotics, AI-enabled software, and digital health to Heinz Ventures. As Venture Partner, Deals & Diligence, he sources and evaluates pre-seed and seed-stage companies developing FDA-regulated technologies for unmet clinical needs. He brings an operator’s perspective to the clinical evidence, regulatory strategy, and commercial execution needed to bring new products to patients.
Larry began his career at Stryker, working in regulatory affairs across surgical and visualization products and contributing to acquisition and partnership diligence. He later co-founded Horizon Medical Device Consulting, where he helped secure FDA clearance for the first deep-learning (DL) medical software product (SaMD). At Verb Surgical, the surgical robotics joint venture between Johnson & Johnson and Google/Verily, he led regulatory strategy for a robotics platform before moving into product management and global strategic marketing (GSM).
Following Verb’s acquisition by Johnson & Johnson, Larry worked on digital surgery initiatives across J&J’s Ethicon Franchise and the commercialization of AI-powered surgical video analytics. He subsequently served as Director of Digital Endpoints & Biomarker at Medable, evaluating wearable sensors and digital health technologies (DHT) and developing commercial partnerships with pharmaceutical clients.
Larry is also an active early-stage investor, mentor, and advisor. His relationships with founders, investors, and programs including Stanford StartX Med, MedTech Innovator (MTI), Berkeley SkyDeck, and Stanford Business School’s Ignite Entrepreneurship Program help him identify promising ventures. In diligence, he assesses clinical needs, product differentiation, regulatory risk, commercial adoption, and potential strategic value.
Larry holds a B.S. in Bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed Stanford GSB’s Ignite program, where he continues to mentor technical founders. He lives in Santa Clara, California, with his family.
